Have you ever seen one of those things that people put inside their car under the windshield that reflects the sun on hot days to keep their car cool? If you have, you understand the basic concept behind cool roof technology.

A cool roof is designed to reflect radiation from the sun. This can lead to a much lower cooling cost in the summer, since heat from the sun is not absorbed into the home. Areas like your garage or attic that don’t have air conditioning can maintain a much more comfortable temperature. If used by enough homes, cool roofs can even help the environment by reducing power plant emissions, since the power plant will not need to produce as much cooling energy. While cool roofs are a bit more expensive than typical roofs, you may be able to take advantage of incentives offered due to cool roofs contributing to fewer blackouts or brownouts in summer.
